Digitization: In-House or On-Site
Kirtas Technologies can digitize books at its corporate headquarters, its Service Bureaus, or by sending its personnel and equipment directly to the client and digitizing the volumes there.
Digitizing Books and Bound Documents
Books are digitized using Kirtas' unique high-quality digitizing technology. Though proprietary, much of the system's effectiveness is based on its use of top quality digital photography to capture images, rather than flatbed scanning methods. Kirtas normally aims at creating high-resolution color images from the very beginning, rather than restricting itself to low-quality low-resolution alternatives,
When digitizing rare, valuable or brittle books, Kirtas normally deploys the APT 2400RA in manual mode . While the features of the 2400RA in manual mode are the same as those in automated mode, operators wear gloves to further ensure gentle handling and make certain that no damage is caused to the book.
Rare and brittle books that are valuable are often much better handled by the 2400RA than by turning the pages manually. But if manual page turning is requested, Kirtas uses the 2400 in manual mode, setting the SmartCradle to ensure no damage to the spine.
When digitizing pamphlets, depending on the page count and condition of each pamphlet, the APT2400RA is used in semi-automated or automated mode. For documents that are disbound or for pamphlets better best suited to be disbound, Kirtas utilizes document scanners that can digitize 6,000 pages of unbound books per hour.
For digitizing bound books, Kirtas uses the APT 2400RA in automatic mode. A non-destructive robotic digitization system, the APT 2400RA uses features including:
Our Smart Cradle™ that gently holds the book open to 110 degrees virtually eliminating damage to the book’s spine during the digitization process. The Smart Cradle™ adjusts the book during the page turning process to keep the page position consistent to the two 21 mega pixel cameras, recording the image at 600, 400 or 300 DPI resolutions depending on the book..
Kirtas’ Sure Arm™ uses a gentle suction to lift and turn each page, eliminating potential tears from human contact.
The Enhanced Page Separator™ separates the page to avoid paper sticking together.
And our Page Edge Sensor™ ensures that page clamps gently hold the page down to minimize curvature and ensure the best image quality, providing no multi-feed and 100% page digitization.
What About Oversized Books, Maps Or Foldouts?
Kirtas' non-destructive scanning tools includes proprietary systems for digitizing oversized books larger than 15 X 21. These systems can scan 400 pages per hour in manual mode, and 800 in auto, using the same technology Kirtas applies to other bound documents, including the use of a 21 Megapixel camera.
Kirtas also has a proprietary system for handing maps and foldouts.
This system, unlike planetary scanners, incorporates a design specifically for foldouts. A vacuum suction gently holds the pages ensuring no damage to the documents. As many as twenty maps and foldouts can be digitized in an hour.
Once book has been processed and is in the Quality Control stage, our BSE software reads the previous technical metadata and displays a pop-up note where maps and foldouts are to be placed, or to tell the operator if pages that should be included are missing.
