Libraries

The University of Bologna

The University of Bologna (Alma Mater Studiorum–Latin for "fostering mother of studies"--Universita di Bologna) is recognized as one of the oldest continually operating degree-granting universities in the world, and the second largest university in Italy. Dating back to 1088 AD, it is thought to be the first university founded in the Western world, and was historically notable for its teaching of Canon and civil law.

The Rochester Public Library

The Rochester Public Library in Rochester, New York holds a large and significant collection of regional history materials in its Local History Division, with materials dating as far back as the early 1800s. Heavy use of the fragile materials was gradually wearing on the collection and causing damage...

Virginia Tech

Virginia Tech’s Digital Imaging unit serves the university community by tailoring its services to the continuously evolving needs and requirements of an information technology driven academic institution. With an experienced imaging staff bringing together a wide range of professional abilities from the graphic arts and photography fields, combined with state-of-the-art equipment, Digital Imaging is soundly positioned to fulfill the expectations of the University’s faculty and students involved with research and other instructional development projects.

Texas Tech University Libraries

When Texas Tech University Libraries decided to step up production with respect to their digital initiative, they chose a solution by Kirtas Technologies Inc.. The initiative began in 2004 when administrators saw the need to replicate physical holdings for preservation purposes and to make out of-copyright materials accessible to off-site patrons such as Texas Tech distance learning students.

Emory University

The Robert W. Woodruff Library at Emory University is one of the premier research libraries in the United States. Home to over 3-million volumes, the library has extensive holdings in virtually all areas of the humanities, including many rare and special collections. With high demand on these aging materials and stress from repeat use, Emory felt that mass digitization was an important step to ensure the protection and preservation of these volumes for years to come.

University Of Maine

The University of Maine’s collection at Fogler Library and the collections of the Maine State Library are a rich resource for the study of Maine and its people.

The Copyright Issue

  • What About Copyright?

A number of publishers, authors and organizations, such as the American Library Association, oppose against digitization of copyrighted materials without "proper" compensation.

  • Additionally, there are many so called "orphan works" objects for which the copyright cannot be determined and therefore public access cannot be given.

  • Kirtas has been successful in overcoming the copyright obstacle by focusing on unique or special collections, older books no longer covered by copyright, local history and proprietary genealogy information.

  • High speed digitization technology offers a compelling access, preservation and cost-cutting advantage to libraries.
